Several months ago, West, a small press comic, was recommended to me when I was looking a Wild Western fix. It was around the time when I was watching the final season of Deadwood. I was really disappointed that there would be no more seasons of Deadwood.
So I lamented this to an acquaintance when he suggested I try out West. Written by Andrew Cheverton and art by Tim Keable. I bought all 5 available issues.
- West Issue 1: Justice
- West Issue 2: Population 489
- West Issue 3: High Moon
- West Issue 4: Texas Drama
- West Issue 0: Tall Tales
I loved them all. Tim Keable has a lot of freedom in drawing the comics in any style it suits the story. Most issues are in black and white with greytones. There is a special limited edition with a colour cover, issue 4 only (Texas Drama).
West follows the adventures of Jerusalem West and often trouble is never too far. I read all of those issues and I noticed an object that appears in most, if not all, of the issues.
I asked Andrew about it and he says the significance of that object is not explained until the last issue! If you want to find out what’s the object is, look at each panel very carefully especially when West is staring off into space.
Andrew’s storylines use a mix of Western and a small part of the supernatural/occult. Issue 0 has 3 short stories. One of them is Guns on a Cold Morning which is my favourite.
Each issue is priced at £2. I’m surprised at this. I seriously think they are undervaluing their work by selling at a cheap price.
I wholeheartedly recommend West for those who love Westerns.
Andrew Cheverton has an online store where you can purchase those comics.
